Keep Reading All Summer Long!

At Amelia Earhart Elementary, we believe that learning doesn’t stop when school’s out—and that includes reading! Research shows that many students experience a loss of reading skills during the summer months, but that doesn’t have to be the case for our Eagles. We’ve all worked hard this year to grow as readers—let’s keep that momentum going and keep those reading muscles strong!

Don’t Miss: Amelia Earhart’s Summer Reading BINGO!

This fun and flexible activity makes summer reading an adventure.

Here’s how it works:

Grades K–2: Read or listen to someone read aloud for at least 15 minutes.

Grades 3–6: Read or listen for at least 30 minutes.

Each BINGO square offers a fun challenge, such as:

  • “Read all the labels in your refrigerator”
  • “Read a menu”
  • “Read at a park”
  • “Read under a table”

Prizes & Blackout Bonus Black out your entire BINGO card and bring it to the school office to claim your prize on any of the following summer office days: June 5, 10, or 12 August 4, 5, or 7 from 10 – 2

Turn in a two-sided BLACKOUT BINGO card and you’ll be entered into a special prize lottery!

Deadline: August 15, All completed cards must be turned in by August 15. Need another BINGO card? Stop by the school office during summer hours to pick one up.

Let’s make this a summer full of stories, imagination, and learning. Happy reading, Aviators!

Here are fun ways to read and learn all summer:

Read Every Day: Make reading part of your daily routine. Just 15–30 minutes a day can make a big difference!

Join the Provo City Library’s Color the World Summer Reading Program: Sign-ups begin June 1. This program offers fun incentives and helps kids stay excited about reading all summer long.

Listen and Learn: Try audiobooks, kid-friendly podcasts, or YouTube read-aloud channels like Storyline Online. The Provo City Library can set you up with the Libby App to access audiobooks and more! It all counts as reading—and it’s great for car rides, quiet time, or winding down at night.

Pair Reading with Hands-On Activities: Make reading come alive! Read a cookbook or a story with recipes, and then try making the dishes together. We recommend:

  • Thundercake by Patricia Polacco
  • Pie by Sarah Weeks
  • Everything on a Waffle by Polly Horvath — also our Earhart Literacy Community read for the upcoming school year!

Not into cooking? No problem! Visit the Start with a Book website listed below,

where you can find themed books and matching activities on topics like:

  • Birds
  • Bugs
  • Dinosaurs
  • Flight
  • Inventions
  • Math
  • Nature
  • Oceans,
  • Weather …and so much more!

Read as a Family

Family reading time is powerful. Set a daily time for family reading, where everyone reads their own book and then shares what they’re enjoying. Alternatively, read the same book together and discuss it as a group.

When someone asks, “Where did you go this summer?” You can include the adventures you took through the pages of a book! Currently, I am enjoying living in a Massachusetts beach house with the twelve-year-old protagonist, Jane, from the book “My One Hundred Adventures” by Polly Horvath. The activity I will complete as a result of this book is making strawberry jam. Read it to find out why!
