Today I met with each 5th and 6th-grade class to review the Cell Phone policy with those students.  I thought it would be good to send a reminder to all parents as well so that you can follow up with your kids as needed.

We discussed the connection between speed limits and our cell phone policy.  Both are created to keep people safe (for the cell phone policy we don’t want students accessing inappropriate materials, potentially showing that to others, or being distracted from learning with games or social media).  We also talked about that while some people could potentially drive safely at a higher speed than posted, everyone is expected to drive the speed limit regardless.  The same applies to cell phones at school.  While some students might not have concerns with inappropriate use, the expectation is the same for all students.

1.      Our current cell phone policy is that while students are on school grounds (including the bus) – cell phones are to be turned off and to be put in their backpacks.  Walking to and from school (off of school grounds) they can be used up to parent discretion.

2.      If a student needs to contact a parent while at school, we ask that the student communicate that need with their teacher, who can help facilitate the contact of a parent if needed.  If a parent sees an ongoing need to communicate with their child, we encourage parents to reach out to their teachers to work out the specifics of those needs.  Exceptions may be made for medical conditions (e.g. diabetes).  If a parent needs to contact a student, we ask that the parent call the school, and our secretaries can facilitate needed communication.

3.      The first time a student is seen using a cell phone or device (e.g. iPod) at school, it will be taken by the teacher and returned to the student at the end of the day.  The second time, the teacher will take the phone and contact parents to come pick it up from them.  The third time it will be given to myself (Mr. McCarty) and I will contact parents to come and pick it up from me.

Hoy me reuní con cada clase de 5º y 6º grado para revisar la política de teléfonos celulares con esos estudiantes.  Pensé que sería bueno enviar un recordatorio a todos los padres también para que puedan hacer un seguimiento con sus hijos según sea necesario.

Discutimos la conexión entre los límites de velocidad y nuestra política de teléfonos celulares.  Ambas son creadas para mantener a la gente segura (para la política de teléfonos celulares no queremos que los estudiantes accedan a materiales inapropiados, potencialmente mostrando eso a otros, o que se distraigan del aprendizaje con juegos o medios sociales).  También hablamos de que, aunque algunas personas podrían conducir con seguridad a una velocidad superior a la indicada, se espera que todo el mundo conduzca al límite de velocidad independientemente de ello.  Lo mismo se aplica a los teléfonos móviles en la escuela.  Mientras que algunos estudiantes pueden no tener preocupaciones con el uso inapropiado, la expectativa es la misma para todos los estudiantes.

3.      La primera vez que se vea a un alumno utilizando un teléfono móvil o un dispositivo (por ejemplo, un iPod) en la escuela, el profesor se lo llevará y se lo devolverá al final del día.  La segunda vez, el profesor se llevará el teléfono y se pondrá en contacto con los padres para que vengan a recogerlo.  La tercera vez se entregará a mí mismo (Sr. McCarty) y me pondré en contacto con los padres para que vengan a recogerlo.
